Empowering Egyptian Civil Society, Accelerating Social Change and Transitions to Democracy, Tolerance and Co-Existence

Open Call for Proposals, 2011-2012

With support from the Danish Government, the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Institute (DEDI) announces the establishment of a new fund with the purpose of contributing to the changing political environment, by supporting proactive civil society participation. Leading to inclusive relations between different groups in the population, and to constructive relations between citizens and authorities, especially the coming government.

These efforts will be built on the integral demands of the 25th of January Revolution: Freedom, Dignity and Social Justice.

The fund will be used to support and empower civil society and media organizations and their relations to the public sector, and publics in general. This will happen through innovative projects and research that contribute to peaceful democratic transition and good governance. Gender equality, critical thought and outreach should be crosscutting themes in the projects. These aims will be pursued through different methods, including professional partnership and dialogue between European and Arab organizations, transfer of global comparative experience and know-how to Egyptian civil society, and finally through supporting nascent initiatives by young Egyptians.

To support a peaceful transition process in Egypt, it is essential to strengthen dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation between diverse groups in Egyptian society. This process will aspire to benefit from Danish and European experiences within an equal partnership framework. The success is connected to issues such as legitimate and transparent public institutions, good governance and protection of the rights of individuals and groups. It is also connected to the public sphere, media and education. Hence, not only should projects include a cross-cultural dialogue component, but also an applied or practical output that could be in disciplinary fields such as social, cultural, political or environmental.
