Art, Culture, and Dialogue: “Streets of Cairo”
Projects >> Art, Culture, and Dialogue: “Streets of Cairo”
Introduction
This project was implemented in the summer of 2010. It aims at stimulating the ongoing process in Cairo where street art serves as a vehicle for promoting the reclamation of public space by means of positive cultural and social exchange through collaborations with Danish peer artists.
The “Streets of Cairo” project consisted of a ten-day ongoing exchange between Danish and Egyptian street artists held in Cairo. It included street art workshop for kids, a street photography workshop for semi-professionals, a workshop for professional street artist in Egypt and Denmark, and two food-cooking events by professional chefs. The project also had several performances by DJs, several street art interventions by artists, a critical run around the pyramids of Giza and two large concerts. Furthermore, participants were submersed into local Egyptian culture by attending and performing at a "Shaabi" wedding in Mattariya district (lower-middle class neighborhood).
Participants
Ten Egyptian artists and DJs along with 13 Danish musicians and visual artists have participated in the project conducting street interventions and performances. Two Danish chefs managed to create a fusion of both cuisines in public events and 10 children from Ard el lewa neighborhood in Cairo attended an art workshop moderated by a Danish artist.
An estimated 650 Egyptians attended concerts held at Townhouse and at Al Sawy Cultural wheel.
