Women, Quota and Elections

Introduction

Since July 2010, the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Institute (DEDI) has helped enhance the participation of Egyptian women in top politics through the project “Women, Quota and Elections”. The project aimed to activate the role of Egyptian women in political life by building their capacity to manage electoral campaigns. The project has furthermore raised the awareness of Egyptian women, men, political parties, syndicates, the media and NGOs about women’s rights, as well as about the importance of women’s political participation. It also helped stimulate civil society institutions to support and monitor women’s political participation.

 

The activities of the project have included training sessions for female candidates, assistants and media personnel, and the establishment of a political support unit at the Association of the Egyptian Female Lawyers (AEFL) premises. It is scheduled to invite a Danish junior researcher to conduct a comparative study of women and political participation in Egypt and Denmark

Participants

Eighty five Egyptian female candidates have participated in training course to contest parliamentary elections in 2010, as well as 76 campaign managers who been nominated by the female candidates.
