Photojournalism workshops

New series of workshops organized by the School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) in collaboration with Photopia teaches young Egyptian photographers the art of photojournalism.

What is photojournalism? How do the genres of photojournalism differ from each other? How does one choose a style? Why is photojournalism important?

From September 10th to 14th 2019 Søren Pagter, head of the photojournalism programmes at the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX), gave a five day workshop on the genres and styles of photojournalism — the first of 4 workshops that forms a 1-year-long course in advanced photojournalism. Throughout the the workshop the participants were to critically discuss other photographers work, brainstorm on ideas for visual stories and work on small assignments.

The course has the aim to educate 10-12 Egyptian photographers in the language of photojournalism. The workshops are designed to illuminate the different aspects of working with photojournalism, and prepare the participants to enter the field professionally by exploring topics like journalistic portraits, written journalism, research and project proposal writing. The course offers credentials from DMJX, as it is designed and delivered by one of Europe’s best photojournalism schools, The Danish School of Media & Journalism (DMJX), and the participants will get a transcript when they have participated in all workshops and handed in the final assignment.

Søren Pagter has been the head of the world-famous photojournalism education at the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) since 1998. He teaches both Danish and international students of Photojournalism. Through his job at DMJX he has conducted workshops at almost all the big newspapers in Denmark. Similarly, he has arranged and organized several international workshops in Armenia, Nepal, Russia and the Nordic countries. He has also been a part of several national and international juries, for example the POYI and the Freelens Award. Today, Pagter is still an active photojournalist and has been since 1988.
